A featured image in WordPress is a single image that is associated with a post.
If assigned, it will show up in different places on your website depending on your theme and your settings.
It is also the image that will be shared on social media if someone decides to share your content.
I think it’s a good idea to always assign a featured image so you can relay the content of the blog instantly and intrigue your visitor to read.
Add a Featured Image
► Login to WordPress if you aren’t already.
► Click on Posts > All Posts
► Hover over the title of the blog post you would like to work with and click on the Edit link underneath it.
This will take you to the Add New Post page in edit mode.
► Scroll all the way down until you see a box that says, ‘Featured Image’ in the bottom right.
If you don’t see this box, scroll to the top and click on the Screen Options tab, then check the box next to ‘Featured Image’ and it will appear.
► Click on the ‘Set featured image’ link.
This will open the Media Library.
► Select the image you would like to use or upload a new image and select it.
Be sure to add a Title and Alt Text, at a minimum so you get the SEO benefit from the image.
► Click the ‘Set featured image’ button in the bottom right.
This will take you back to the post and you’ll see a small representation of the image you just selected.
► Scroll up and Click on the ‘Update’ button in the ‘Publish’ box on the right.
Congratulations! You just added a featured image to your blog post.
