Create a Google Analytics Account

There are a lot of reasons you will want to create a Google Analytics account but the main reason is so you can acquire data about how people are interacting with your website.

Before you can start getting this powerful data, you need to create an account.

Here’s how:

► Login to your main Google account if you aren’t already.

► Go to https://www.google.com/analytics.

► Click on the Sign up button.

This will take you to the New Account page.

► Select Website in the ‘What would you like to track?’ section.

► Type in an Account name.

If you have one website for your business, I suggest putting the business name as the Account name.

If you have more than one business website, I suggest using ‘Business’ as the Account name and then adding each website as its own property.

► Type in the Website Name

I suggest typing in the truncated URL here. For example, alishamcfarland.com.

► Choose the precursor by clicking on the drop-down menu.

Choose http:// if you do not have an SSL certificate for this URL or don’t know what that is.

Choose https:// if you have an SSL certificate for this URL.

► Type in the Website URL.

Type in the same URL you provided above since Google Analytics will add the precursor (http:// or https://).

► Select the Industry Category

Make sure you choose the correct industry category so that your website will benchmark properly.

► Select the Reporting Time Zone.

► Type in the Website URL.

Choose the same time zone that you are in.

► Leave all of the Data Sharing Settings boxes checked

► Click the blue ‘Get Tracking ID’ button at the bottom.

This will take you to the page with your tracking ID, Status, and Website tracking code.

The tracking ID or Website tracking code are what you can use to link your website to Google Analytics.

Which one you use depends on the theme and/or plugins you are using.

If you are using the GeneratePress theme, copy the code and place it in the wp_head box of GP Hooks which can be found in the Appearance menu section of the Dashboard.

Congratulations! You have just created a Google Analytics account for your website.

Once you have added the tracking code to your website, you should start to see data immediately in the Real-Time reports in the Google Analytics dashboard.
