Website Loading Time

How fast your website loads on someone’s smartphone, tablet or laptop often times will be the deciding factor in that person’s impression of you and your website.

If it takes ‘forever’ (meaning more than ONE second!*), it’s very likely that the person will move on.

If, however, they are blown away by how fast it loads, even with a weak signal, you’ve at least got a chance to connect with them and provide what they were looking for.

One of the tools you can use to measure the performance of a website for mobile devices and desktop devices is Google’s Page Speed Insights. Once you enter the website URL in the box and click the Analyze button, it fetches the url twice, once with a mobile user-agent, and once with a desktop-user agent. Then it gives you a score.

The PageSpeed Score ranges from 0 to 100 points. A higher score is better and a score of 85 or above indicates that the page is performing well. Of course, nothing stays the same in Google-land, so PageSpeed Insights is continually being improved upon. This means the scoring system will likely change as they add new rules or improve their analysis.

For now, the scores are based on how the page can improve its performance on:

  • Time to Above-the-Fold Load
    • Elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page and to the moment the above-the-fold content is rendered by the browser.
      • ‘Above-the-fold’ means the top of the website that the person can immediately see without scrolling. This changes depending on the device they are using.
  • Time to Full Page Load
    • Elapsed time from the moment a user requests a new page to the moment the page is fully rendered by the browser.

With the score, PageSpeed Insights also provides suggestions rated with priority indicators:

  • Red exclamation point
    • Fixing this would have a measurable impact on page performance.
  • Yellow exclamation point
    • Consider fixing this if it is not a lot of work.
  • Green check mark
    • No significant issues found.

Dealing with the suggestions is the topic of many other articles, but analyzing your website using Google’s PageSpeed Insights is definitely a good start!
